Valvoline 4 Stroke, together with Mobil 1 and Shell Rotella motorcycle oils are among the best alternatives for Honda gn4 10w40. These three equivalents have met the JASO MA2 standards which is the primary requirement set by Honda. Let’s discuss what other equivalents are available for Honda Gn4 10w40.
Can I use 10W40 instead of 5w40?
Yes. 10w40 is thicker than 5w40, it will not lubricate all the parts that need lubricating from cold. You’d probably be better of leaving the old oil in there than swapping the correct (but old) oil for incorrect (new) oil. Should I use thicker oil in an older engine? A: Yes.
Can you use 10W40 in a high mileage vehicle?
You can apply the 10w40 motor oil in vehicles which have higher mileage because this oil is thicker when the engine is hot, thereby helping to lubricate older moving parts. Use 10W40 to start up vehicles in winter climates of temperatures about 10 degrees Celsius. 10w40 is not as reliable as 5W40 oil for engine startup in colder winter climates.
Should I use 10W30 or 10W40?
When deciding between 10w30 and 10w40, if you are a casual driver, then 10w30 is the best option. If you’re driving in hotter weather or anticipate a heavier load on your engine, I recommend using 10w40.
Which oil is thicker 10W30 or 10W40?
The quick answer is 10W40 is a thicker engine oil than 10W30 at higher temperatures. Both have almost the same characteristics, and the only difference is the oil viscosity. Sadly, that quick answer doesn’t make it any easier to understand. You will first need to know what oil viscosity is and what the numbers of both motor oils mean.

Honda GN4 questions? | Bob Is The Oil Guy
Honda also makes a full synthetic oil in 10W-30. I used it for awhile in my 2014 Honda Rancher 420 automatic shift and it made shifts very smooth and my engine fan hardly ever kicked on but it’s expensive and it did cause my engine to tick more loudly when running it.

What oil should I use for a JASO MA?
For cold weather, I’d run either their 0w-40, Series 3000, 5w-30 or 10w-30/ACD diesel oil. All of these use an additive chemistry that meets the JASO MA, wet clutch specification. Recommended service interval is two times the manufacturers recommended drain interval. If you use a Super Duty oil filter, you can also double your filter change intervals. Is Amsoil oil good for Honda 4 wheelers?
Amsoil is so good its worth a little inconvience to get it. Some of the oils mentioned are auto/truck oils and not recommended for Honda 4 wheelers because they have friction modifiers that can affect wet clutchs. Dont’ know about the M/C as I have not had one for over 10 yrs.
