Ep 90 gear oil equivalent

image

The spec’ed pre-2000 SAE EP 90 was split into two categories of :- a) Current day J306 SAE EP 90, equivalent to AGMA 4EP gear oil or ISO 150 gear oil,and b) Current day J306 SAE EP 110, equivalent to AGMA 5EP gear oil or ISO 220 gear oil. As said above, SAE 80W90 is thinner than a SAE 90. Is this a problem?

An SAE 90 gearbox oil is roughly the same viscosity as an SAE 50 engine oil. Most manufacturers now offer EP80W/90 oils in place of both EP80 and EP90. In viscosity terms, this is analagous to using a 20W/50 engine oil in the sump, and will do no harm.

Is EP 90 the same as SAE 90?

Classic Gear EP 90 is a mineral SAE 90 transmission oil. The product is suitable for use in manual transmissions and other transmissions in classic vehicles that require a medium single-grade oil with extreme pressure protection that meets the API GL-4 specification.

Can I use 80w90 instead of EP90?

If its asking for SAE 90, an SAE 80w/90 will be fine as it is a 90 at operating temperature, so just giving a wider temperature range to work from. The 80 side will benefit you when putting the machine in gear when it’s cold.

What is EP90 oil?

Classic EP 90 is a mineral oil based gear oil containing anti-oxidant, anti-wear and extreme pressure additives to protect against problems due to oil oxidation, gear wear and corrosion.

The 80 side will benefit you when putting the machine in gear when it’s cold.

Can you use motor oil as gear oil?

No, the majority of gearboxes require a special formulated lubricant for the transmission system. whose crankcase is common between the engine and the transmissions.

What oil do I put in my diff?

There are two types of differential fluid. One is mineral oil, which is a natural, crude oil-based fluid. The other is synthetic differential fluid, which is created in a lab. As with all synthetic oils, synthetic differential fluid oils can be fine-tuned for optimal performance.

What is the difference between gl4 and gl5 gear oil?

Is 80W 90 the same as 80W 90?

Many years ago when the SAE viscosity classifications came out many gear oils were made with low quality base oils. Now a days all reputable manufactures use at least Grp I base oils. And almost all 90 grades can also be qualified as 80W-90. 80W-90 do not contain viscosity modifiers so they will not shear out of grade. In practice 80W-90 and 90 are the same thing.

How much oil is in a SAE 90?

SAE 90 gear oil is equivalent to 50wt engine oil (SAE 80 = 30wt), so you could always dump that in instead if you want. 15W40 diesel oil is close enough to dump in there. Please don’t use anything but gear oil, like 80W-90 in a gearbox or axle that specifies it.

What is gear oil?

Gear oil is a lubricant made specifically for transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials in automobiles, trucks, and other machinery. It is of a higher viscosity to better protect the gears and usually is associated with a strong sulfur smell. The high viscosity ensures transfer of lubricant throughout the gear train. This is necessary since the devices needing this heavy oil do not have pumps for transferring the oil with only

What is the viscosity of gear oil?

API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example, many modern gearboxes use a 75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil. Multigrade gear oils are b

Why use 10W/30 oil on scooters?

The reason the scooter manufacturer may recommend 10W/30 for transmission is becuase it makes the supply chain easier – the service centers have to stock only one oil. Hence, SAE 90 gear oil is the right oil to be used, even if the manufacturer recommends 10W/30. 3.3K views. ·. View upvotes.
